Colorado Preservation, Inc.’s On the Road 2010 will be an exciting visit to the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area in the lower San Luis Valley. Comprised of three counties (Costilla, Conejos, and Alamosa), this area is a blend of people, cultures, beauty, and natural wonders. The valley is also home to Colorado’s first established towns and churches, sacred public art, farms and farmers’ markets, the haunting landscapes of Los Caminos Antiguos, and the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve.

This year, On the Road will sample the wide array of culture, history, foods, architecture, and landscapes. Don’t miss this opportunity to join the board of directors and staff of Colorado Preservation for this unique and exciting heritage tourism event!

Saturday, September 11, 2010 motorcoach tour begins at 9:00 A.M. at the Inn at the Rio Grande in Alamosa. We will tour sites such as Guadalupe Church in Conejos, San Luis Valley Brewing Company, The Zapata Ranch, Stations of the Cross in San Luis,Viejo San Acaio, San Luis Courthouse, Huberto Maestas' sculpture studio, and the Alamosa-Antonito Train.

Neoclassical Denver Walking Tour

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America Rocky Mountain Chapter invite you to explore the Neoclassical elements and edifices of downtown Denver --the Rome of the Rockies. This two-hour tour will be led by Tom “Dr. Colorado” Noel, author of  Buildings of Colorado (Oxford University Press), Denver the City Beautiful and its Architects (with Barbara Norgren) and, Guide to Colorado Historic Places (Westcliffe Publishers).

Storytellers include Dr. Colorado (Tom Noel), Mark Twain (Hugh Bingham), Mary Elitch (Debra Faulkner) Edgar Allen Poe (Dennis Gallagher), Eliza Routt (Kathleen Barlow), Mr. And Mrs. J.J. “Unsinkable” Brown (Breck and Mary Lynn Grover), state Historian Bill Convery,  Mattie Silks (Charla Fleming), and other exhumed eccentrics.

Riverside Halloween Tour

Saturday, October 30, 2010 - 1:00 4:00 PM.

History Colorado, hosted by the Fairmount Heritage Foundation, invites you to pay your respects to Colorado’s first pioneers on a Riverside Cemetery Halloween Tour. You may walk or ride with The Model A Ford Club of Colorado’s tombstone taxi service.  Tom “Dr. Colorado” Noel and a team of hysterical historians  will introduce you to characters such as Nathan A. Baker, whose daughter claimed he "loved horses more than his own blood kin," and lies under a life sized Arabian stone stallion named Frank. You will meet Lester Drake in his miner's cabin, Aunt Clara Brown, Countess Katrina Murat, Silas Soule, Kiku Oyama, and Barney Ford. Additional subterranean celebrities include Colorado governors, educators, businessmen and businesswomen, and others who shaped Denver into the “Queen City of the Rockies”.

Join us for a tour filled with hilarious, heartbreaking, and haunting tales from Denver’s early years.

Behind the Scenes at Denver International Airport (DIA)

Saturday, November 6, 2010- 1:00 P. M.- 4:00 P.M.

Most travelers dashing through DIA have no idea that it incorporates one of the nation’s largest public art collections. Join History Colorado's Behind the Scenes tour. DIA’s Director of Publications Steve Klodt, Public Art Administrator Matt Chasansky, and Tom “Dr. Colorado” Noel will take you to places most travelers never see -- from the snowplow garage to the communications center. Tour highlights include a bus tour of the airfield and discussions of the airport’s provocative works of art, such as the fiery-eyed Mustang.

Date of birth and identification card will be required for security purposes.
